About Thomas Dimson
Thomas Dimson earned a Bachelor of Mathematics from University of Waterloo (2005-2010) and Master's in Computer Science with AI focus from Stanford University (2012-2014). He started his career as a Software Engineer at Amazon (2011-2012), working on Kindle data products including Popular Highlights features. In 2013, he joined Instagram as employee #16 and the first machine learning hire, becoming Principal Engineer/Director of Engineering. At Instagram, he authored the platform's first content ranking algorithm and led teams responsible for feed ranking, explore ranking, stories ranking, and IGTV. He also started Instagram's New York City engineering office. In 2021, he co-founded Global Illumination with Taylor Gordon and Joey Flynn, creating AI-powered creative tools and digital experiences, including the notable open-source web-based MMORPG called Biomes.
