Modal Labs opens London office to expand European AI inference presence

New York-headquartered AI infrastructure startup Modal Labs is opening a new office in London's Marble Arch area, the company confirmed. The space can accommodate up to 40 workers, with the company planning to have all London staff in place by early September, according to sources. Modal Labs, founded in 2021, provides computing infrastructure for AI workloads, focusing specifically on AI inference—the process of running an AI model—as opposed to training. This move marks a strategic expansion of its European footprint, joining existing offices in New York, San Francisco, and Sweden (Stockholm).

This expansion aligns with a broader trend of North American AI companies strengthening their presence in London, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Cursor, and Cohere. For Modal Labs, the London office serves as a hub to better serve European customers, as CEO Erik Bernhardsson noted: "Modal has been transatlantic since day one: New York, San Francisco, Stockholm. We're doubling down with our new London office as part of our commitment to helping European companies achieve scale." The company recently raised $355 million in a Series C round led by Redpoint Ventures and General Catalyst, valuing it at $4.65 billion, up from $1.1 billion eight months prior. Per the AI Market Watch index, Modal Labs has raised $465 million in total funding (coverage limited to ~5,000 tracked companies).

For builders and investors, this office opening signals Modal Labs' intent to deepen its enterprise sales and support capabilities in Europe, a key market for AI inference workloads. The focus on inference over training suggests a bet on the growing demand for cost-efficient, low-latency AI serving—an area that could see increased competition as more US-based AI infrastructure players expand globally. European startups seeking reliable, high-performance inference infrastructure may find Modal Labs a more accessible partner, while investors tracking AI infrastructure will watch how this geographic diversification impacts the company's growth trajectory.
