The AMW Read

Incremental update to a known player in AI healthcare (06.§2); contract size is small and the company has been public since 2024, so this is a steady execution update rather than a structural or market-moving development.

3Billion (쓰리빌리언), a South Korean AI genetic diagnostics firm, has secured a contract to perform whole-genome sequencing (WGS)-based newborn screening for 1,800 cases under the Korean Genome Newborn Screening (K-gNBS) program. The contract, valued at 900 million won (~$0.7M) with Seoul Asan Hospital, runs through December 2028. The agreement was disclosed in the company's semi-annual report, representing a concrete step beyond the pilot study it participated in last year, toward the expansion strategy outlined in its 2024 IPO prospectus. Separately, the company launched its own commercial newborn screening service, 3B-NEO, in international markets in June 2026, though specific sales figures have not yet been disclosed.

The contract signals a maturation of the newborn screening market for AI-driven genomic analysis. 3Billion uses its AI variant-interpretation technology, originally developed for rare disease diagnosis, to identify disease-causing mutations in presymptomatic infants. The shift from diagnostic to preventive screening expands the addressable market for AI genomics companies and validates the transferability of AI models trained on symptomatic cohorts to asymptomatic populations. The public-sector contract also provides a reference that could support future commercial sales, particularly for 3B-NEO’s international expansion.

For investors and builders in AI healthcare, the key takeaway is that government-funded genomics programs are becoming a viable initial revenue channel for AI diagnostics firms, funding large-scale data collection and validation before commercial rollout. The 1,800-case program will generate a controlled dataset that could improve variant interpretation accuracy for newborns. However, 3Billion’s ability to convert this into independent commercial revenue — especially overseas — remains unproven, as the company itself has not linked the K-gNBS contract to 3B-NEO sales. The coming quarters will reveal whether public-sector proof-of-concept work translates into proprietary product adoption.
