Anthropic has introduced a dual-layer provenance system for Claude-generated content, embedding invisible watermarks into text and attaching C2PA provenance data to supported image and SVG file outputs. The text watermarking operates at the model level by inserting undetectable statistical patterns directly into generated tokens, while the digital provenance metadata follows C2PA open standards for file-based outputs. The rollout begins with Claude models released after August 2, 2026, aligning with EU AI Act Article 50 compliance requirements.
This move positions technical provenance as the primary compliance mechanism for the EU AI Act's transparency obligations, which took effect on August 2, 2026. The watermarking applies globally across all Claude surfaces, including the API platform, web app, Claude Code CLI, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag, as well as through cloud distribution via AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.
