Anthropic reportedly plans an October IPO at up to a $2 trillion valuation, even as ARR growth shows signs of deceleration.

The AMW Read

Confirms and timestamps the already-known $2T IPO trajectory with an October target and June filing, while ARR deceleration triggered a broad AI-stocks selloff that ties model-lab revenue directly to hyperscaler capex justification.

Anthropic reportedly plans an October IPO at up to a $2 trillion valuation, even as ARR growth shows signs of deceleration.

Anthropic confidentially filed for a US IPO in June and is reportedly targeting a listing as early as October at up to a $2 trillion valuation, per the Financial Times. The report follows Bloomberg's disclosure that July's annualized run rate hit $65 billion — up 38% from $47 billion in May and about 7x the $9 billion at 2025's year-end — but below third-party trackers' $70-80 billion consensus. Q2 revenue topped $11.5 billion, up nearly 14x year over year, with Anthropic's first positive adjusted operating margin. Anthropic is tracked in the AI Market Watch index with $132.3 billion in total funding to date (per the AI Market Watch index; coverage, not a census). A separate TickerTrends estimate, built on Claude Code's $15.12 billion tracked ARR versus OpenAI Codex's $8.83 billion (growing four times faster), put total ARR near $69 billion as of August 10 — up just 6.2% from end of July.

Anthropic's ARR has become the reference metric for the broader AI capex buildout: combined annual capex across Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta has climbed from roughly $456 billion to near $750 billion, and Anthropic's growth rate is read as evidence that spending is paying off. The gap between actual and expected ARR triggered a selloff — the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 5%, SanDisk and Micron dropped over 7%, and China's STAR 50 and ChiNext indices fell more than 5% two days later. Much of the growth traces to Claude Code, which reached roughly $2.5 billion ARR by early 2026 before crossing $15 billion by August, a run that also pushed Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, Google's Jules and OpenAI's Codex deeper into autonomous coding.

The bull case rests on Anthropic's internal 2028 ARR projection of $190-200 billion, putting the $2 trillion target near 10x forward revenue versus about 31x current annualized revenue. The bear case cites revenue concentration — API contracts are roughly 80% of revenue — and Chinese open-weight pricing pressure, which contributed to Anthropic cutting Claude Opus 5 pricing on July 25. With only two or three disclosure windows left before an October listing, builders and investors tied to Claude Code pricing or enterprise contracts should watch whether growth reaccelerates or this deceleration holds.
