Cohere completes first close of funding round targeting up to C$7 billion
Canadian AI model developer Cohere has completed the first close of a funding round targeting up to C$7 billion, or roughly $5 billion. The reported valuation is $20.5 billion, approximately three times its level a year ago. Cohere named the Canadian government and Nvidia among investors that have made commitments. The round also includes a previously disclosed $600 million investment from German retailer Schwarz Group. The amount secured in the first close was not disclosed.
The financing shows the scale of capital available to foundation model developers beyond the largest US labs. It also brings public and private investors into the same round as Cohere pursues enterprise and government demand. The deal extends AI Market Watch's prior coverage of Cohere's agreement to merge with Aleph Alpha for sovereign AI. The financing does not establish that the merger has closed or that customers have adopted the combined offering.
For investors, the distinction between the target and the amount secured matters. A first close confirms progress, but it does not establish that the full round is complete. The reported valuation also leaves the financial performance needed to support it unreported in this account. Builders evaluating Cohere should watch whether its enterprise partnerships translate into deployments that meet their requirements for control and operating costs.
