Origin raises $20 million to expand construction robot fleet and customer pilots
Origin, an India-based physical AI startup developing robots for interior construction, raised $20 million in a round co-led by Accel and Zacua Ventures. Unilazer Ventures, Schema Ventures and Z21 also participated, alongside angel investors from Anduril, Skild AI, 1X and Tesla. The funding will expand its fleet and support large-scale customer pilots in the US and Europe. Its flagship OG-1 robot autonomously applies compound, sands and primes walls, including corners, edges and work at height.
The investment places Origin in the task-specific construction robotics market, even as the company describes its underlying platform as general-purpose. Interior finishing provides a defined starting workflow for testing autonomy on changing job sites. Zacua points to skilled-worker shortages and limited construction productivity gains as demand drivers, but also emphasizes the difficulty of operating across different layouts, surfaces and obstacles. That makes reliable execution in customer environments the central test; the financing itself does not establish commercial performance.
For builders and investors, the concrete checkpoint is whether Origin's pilots demonstrate repeatable performance across contractors and sites. The company plans pilots with two of the largest US drywall-finishing contractors, with further deployments planned in Germany, Sweden, France and Saudi Arabia. The article provides no pricing, utilization or customer productivity results, leaving the economics of fleet expansion unproven. Funding will also support additional interior construction tasks, making evidence from OG-1's initial workflow relevant to assessing that broader ambition.
