Morphi (墨奇智能) raises over $140M angel round from Alibaba and Tencent, hits $1B valuation

Morphi, a Chinese embodied AI startup founded in late 2025, has completed an angel-round series financing of more than 10 billion yuan (~$140M) led by Alibaba and Tencent, with participation from dozens of top-tier Chinese VCs. The round values the six-month-old company at over 70 billion yuan (~$1B), setting a domestic record for the largest disclosed first round in the embodied AI sector. Co-founders Huang Qingshao (CTO, ex-Huawei autonomous driving AI lead) and Gao Wenli (CEO, ex-iMile logistics co-founder) bring deep experience in scaling hardware-software systems from zero to mass production.

Why it matters: This is a structural signal in Segment 10 (Robotics/Physical AI). The round’s size and the unprecedented joint investment by China’s two hyperscaler platforms — Alibaba and Tencent — directly exemplify the “hyperscaler distribution moat” pattern (corpus §5.2) being applied to robotics: the investors can provide cloud, AI, data-center, and distribution infrastructure for embodied systems. It also updates the §2 player map for Chinese humanoid/embodied AI, injecting a new well-capitalized entrant with pedigree from both autonomous driving and logistics, both domains with transferable data-loop and control-stack expertise.

The round also pushes on §7 Open Debates around capital intensity in robotics. While U.S. players like Tesla, Figure, and Agility have raised large rounds, the Chinese embodied AI landscape had been characterized by smaller, more fragmented seed and Series A rounds. This $1B valuation within six months — with state-aligned capital from sovereign-adjacent sources — suggests a capital-compression arc: the Chinese ecosystem may be leapfrogging the early-stage fragility phase by injecting mega-rounds directly into teams with proven system-integration track records. The capital also signals growing government alignment behind physically embodied AI as a strategic priority, echoing the broader sovereign-AI push.
