Exein raises $270M at $1.7B for on-device Physical AI security
Rome-founded Exein closed a $270 million equity round at a $1.7 billion valuation, led by Headline with Sofina, Goldman Sachs, the EIB Group through the European Tech Champions Initiative, KfW Capital, and T.Capital, alongside existing investors including Balderton, Lakestar, HV, Blue Cloud Ventures, and Geodesic Capital. The round follows a €100 million raise in December 2025 and lifts cumulative capital past $600 million, with an upsized J.P. Morgan–led revolving credit facility adding dry powder for European and US M&A. Proceeds fund US and APAC expansion: an APAC headquarters in Taiwan, a Japan legal entity with further Q4 2026 growth, a South Korea office planned by 2027, and a new Bay Area office.
The company is pitching itself as the security layer for machines that use AI to act in the physical world—robots, drones, vehicles, grids, and healthcare equipment—where a breach can trigger real-world action rather than a data leak. It cites roughly 5,000 new non-repetitive attacks a week across a footprint of about two billion devices, five times the prior year’s volume, and points to Photon, a kernel-level preemptive runtime meant to stop malicious execution before it runs. Exein is also training a proprietary foundation model on two years of machine telemetry from that installed base, intending to power autonomous security agents; the agentic architecture is slated to ship by end-2026, with first foundation models expected in Q1 2027. Peers such as Claroty and Armis (acquired by ServiceNow for $7.75 billion) sit closer to network-level OT monitoring, while Sternum and Fortaegis contest adjacent on-device or silicon-rooted layers.
For robotics and industrial-AI buyers, firmware- and kernel-level attestation is becoming a procurement filter alongside model capability. Investors should watch whether Exein’s device telemetry and European public-capital stack can outpace network-centric cyber platforms as embodied systems move from pilots into fleets.
