Tabby raises $1M pre-seed for real-time AI bookkeeping aimed at QuickBooks' small-business base

Tabby raises $1M pre-seed for real-time AI bookkeeping aimed at QuickBooks' small-business base

Ahad Ali, a former accountant who ran a 20-person firm handling more than 2,000 tax returns a year, founded Tabby in 2025 after growing frustrated with QuickBooks and the broader SaaS-based accounting model. Tabby uses Plaid to pull live account data and builds an AI-generated, real-time profit-and-loss dashboard for small businesses, alongside a firm-facing version aimed at accountants who want an alternative to QuickBooks. Fourteen months in, the seven-person team has signed up 5,500 small businesses, generates roughly $100,000 in annual recurring revenue, and is raising $1 million in pre-seed funding. It is also launching Tabby Talk, a natural-language interface for the product.

Ali's pitch — that small businesses need less accounting software rather than better accounting software — points at a broader shift in SMB bookkeeping: AI is converting a seat-based software category into a flat-fee service, priced closer to payroll or internet access than to a QuickBooks subscription. That puts Tabby up against Intuit's incumbent QuickBooks franchise, Sequoia-backed Rillet, and finance tools built directly into the major AI labs' own products, all competing to own the same automated-bookkeeping layer for small business.

At $100,000 ARR on a $1 million pre-seed, Tabby is early, but 5,500 SMB customers in fourteen months signals investor appetite for the automation thesis in a market Ali estimates at 30 million underserved businesses. The open question for builders and investors in this niche is whether "invisible" bookkeeping software holds up against the tax and compliance complexity that has kept legacy accounting workflows sticky for decades.
