French startup SquareMind has raised $18 million in a combined pre-Series A and current round to deploy Swan, an AI-powered full-body skin imaging robot, in the US and European markets. The round, announced April 27, was led by Deep Tech 2030, a fund managed by Bpifrance for the French government under the France 2030 initiative, and Sonder Capital, a California-based venture firm co-founded by Fred Moll, a pioneer in medical robotics and founder of Intuitive Surgical. Other participants include Adamed, Calm/Storm Ventures, Teampact Ventures, and several business angels.
Swan is described as the world's first robot capable of mapping the entire skin surface at dermoscopic resolution, comparable to a magnified examination. The system automates image capture via an articulated arm that scans the patient's skin in minutes, then feeds the images to an AI-based software that assists dermatologists in reviewing and tracking moles over time. The company emphasizes that the dermatologist retains final clinical decision-making, positioning Swan as a companion tool to reduce cognitive load and optimize medical time. SquareMind highlights that 80% of melanomas appear as new lesions, and with dermatology appointment wait times reaching up to 12 months in some areas, the technology aims to address the growing demand.
For investors and healthcare providers, SquareMind's approach contrasts with competitor DermaScan, which is building dedicated skin cancer screening centers. SquareMind instead sells a robotic platform that integrates into existing dermatology practices and hospitals, allowing clinicians to maintain their current workflow. This strategy could accelerate adoption by lowering the barrier to entry for practices already facing capacity constraints. The involvement of Fred Moll, who built Intuitive Surgical into a surgical robotics leader, adds credibility to the potential for robotic systems to become standard in dermatology.
