Legato launches $999 AI hearing glasses with on-device voice amplification
Legato has made its flagship Legato Frames available for purchase, starting at $999. Designed for adults with up to moderate hearing loss, the glasses use AI to distinguish voices from background noise, amplify speech, and reduce unwanted sounds. The company says processing happens entirely on the glasses, with no cameras or recording. The open-ear frames weigh 34 grams with lenses, offer 10–12 hours of battery life, and support prescription lenses and Bluetooth streaming. The launch follows Legato's emergence from stealth with $12 million from Neotribe Ventures, Listen, and Village Global.
The AI-market significance lies in hearing-care delivery: Legato packages a specialized assistive function inside eyewear and sells through its website and select U.S. eye care providers. That places it within healthcare AI, where comfort, practical benefit, and purchasing channels matter alongside algorithmic performance. Prescription-lens support and reported eligibility for vision-insurance coverage give the product a distribution route through eye care. Its local processing also makes privacy part of the product design. These features address adoption barriers, but the article provides no independent clinical results establishing how well the system improves hearing in noisy environments.
For builders and investors, the concrete diligence question is whether speech enhancement remains useful throughout everyday wear. Legato says its dual-speaker system directs audio toward the wearer and reduces escaping sound by 99% a few inches from the ear; that claim needs evaluation alongside speech intelligibility, fit, and battery performance. Cofounders Mehul Trivedi and Steve Romine bring experience from Bose's eyewear and hearing-aid businesses, making execution in wearable hearing assistance central to the investment case.
