Mistral raises $3.5 billion at $24 billion valuation in Europe's largest-ever private tech funding round

The AMW Read

Mistral raises $3.5 billion at $24 billion valuation in Europe's largest-ever private tech funding round

Mistral, the three-year-old French foundation-model developer, closed a €3 billion (~$3.5B) round at a valuation of roughly €21 billion (~$24B), the largest private-equity raise ever for a European technology company. Existing investor PSG Equity co-led with two new backers, Samsung Electronics and the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund. CFO Johan Bergqvist said proceeds will fund model development and frontier research, and that Mistral is now Europe's second-most-valuable private tech company and its fastest-growing, per Bergqvist. The raise builds on the Samsung-led round reported earlier this week, adding a concrete $1 billion ARR target and detail on the investor lineup.

Even at this record European scale, Mistral's $24B valuation trails the $965B Anthropic and $852B OpenAI valuations cited alongside it, with both US labs preparing public listings this year. Bergqvist framed the Samsung and EU-fund participation explicitly around sovereign-AI stakes — Europe needing an AI provider whose supply chain can't be compromised by decisions made elsewhere. Per the AI Market Watch index, Mistral's total tracked funding is now roughly $4.0 billion including an $830M debt facility from March 2026 (the index tracks about 5,000 companies — coverage, not a census).

Mistral says it's on pace for $1B in annual recurring revenue by year-end, with growth weighted toward Asia and North America, and cites 125+ enterprise customers running self-hosted, customizable deployments — a distribution angle distinct from API-only frontier labs. For enterprise buyers prioritizing sovereign or on-prem deployment outside the US hyperscaler stack, the expanded balance sheet makes Mistral a more durable vendor option, even as its reliance on Samsung and EU capital underscores how far it still trails the leading US labs on raw valuation.
