Mistral releases Large 4 open weights for coding and cyber defense
The AMW Read
The public weights and reported benchmark gains update Mistral's established open-weight strategy, with implications for competition among model providers.
Mistral releases Large 4 open weights for coding and cyber defense
Mistral has made its 1 trillion-parameter Large 4 model available on Hugging Face after a limited preview, Fortune reports. The French lab says the model leads open models on Artificial Analysis' Coding Agent Index and ties GLM-5.3 on Terminal-Bench 4.0. Mistral reports a rise from 28% to 41% on that benchmark after additional reinforcement learning. These are company-reported results; the source says proprietary models remain ahead in overall capabilities.
The release extends Mistral's open-weight strategy and its pitch to enterprises that want more control over model access. It also advances the European lab's competition with Chinese open-weight providers. Mistral says Large 4 uses 47% fewer tokens per task than GLM-5.3, but an earlier preview assessment found it cost more than four times as much per task as similarly capable open models. Token use alone does not establish a cost advantage.
Builders evaluating Large 4 should test coding performance and total cost on their own workloads. Open weights may help teams retain access and run the model themselves, but the source does not establish their deployment costs or security outcomes. For investors, the distinction matters: benchmark gains can strengthen Mistral's position, while enterprise adoption will also depend on the cost and practical value of running the model.
