ShengShu Technology closes ~$275M Series B for general-purpose world model development
ShengShu Technology (生数科技), the Chinese world-model startup founded by Zhu Jun, has closed a Series B round of nearly RMB 2 billion (~$275M), led by Alibaba Cloud with participation from state-backed funds and strategic investors including Zhongwangtou (中网投), Jiuan Haitang, TAL Education, Guanghe Chuangtou, and existing backers Star Connect Capital, Da Tai Capital, CCB New Economy Investment, Baidu Ventures, and Zhuoyuan Asia. The round comes just two months after a RMB 600M+ A+ round, signaling aggressive capital deployment into world-model R&D.
The company is best known for Vidu, its video-generation model that launched in April 2024 as China's first full Sora competitor. Vidu Q3 (January 2026) achieved global #1 on the Artificial Analysis benchmark, supporting 16-second video with synchronized audio, multi-shot transitions, and camera control. ShengShu also open-sourced Motus in December 2025, a unified world-action model built on its UniDiffuser architecture that demonstrated a 40% task-success improvement over Pi0.5 in embodied scenarios, claims to validate scaling laws for foundation embodied models.
Why it matters: ShengShu's capital velocity — two large rounds in two months — epitomizes the hyperscaler-distribution pattern now playing out in world models, where cloud providers (Alibaba) and sovereign capital (Zhongwangtou) lock in early access to a potential next-generation AI substrate. The company is dual-tracking a Foundation World Model architecture with a World Generation Model for digital worlds and a World Action Model for physical world. If ShengShu can deliver on this unified understanding-generation-action pipeline, it would resolve a key open debate about whether video models are merely content engines or genuine pathways to embodied intelligence.
Grounded take: This is the fastest capital ramp in the world-model segment globally. ShengShu is effectively being given the resources to try to leapfrog the Sora/OpenAI trajectory on a compressed timeline, with Chinese state capital and Alibaba's compute stack serving as both moat and accelerator. The 40% gain over Pi0.5 is notable for an early-stage embodied benchmark. The real test will be whether Motus can generalize across real-world robotic platforms at scale, not just in simulation. #ShengShu #WorldModel #Funding #ChinaAI #FoundationModel #Vidu
