TCS HyperVault to build a 1 GW, $8.4 billion AI data center campus in Hyderabad
The AMW Read
Extends the already-known India AI-infrastructure buildout (HyperVault, TPG, OpenAI ties) with a quantified, gigawatt-scale capital commitment that is segment-significant but incremental to an existing player.
TCS HyperVault to build a 1 GW, $8.4 billion AI data center campus in Hyderabad
Tata Consultancy Services' data center subsidiary HyperVault has secured 264 acres in Hyderabad to build a liquid-cooled AI data center campus with up to 1 GW of capacity, backed by an investment of up to ₹70,000 crore (roughly $8.4 billion) from TCS and its partners. The project will be built in phases tied to market demand and is designed to host high-density compute workloads for frontier AI companies and hyperscalers, with TCS CEO K Krithivasan describing it as central to the company's shift from IT services toward AI infrastructure. HyperVault, launched in October 2025, already counts TPG as a strategic investor committing up to ₹18,000 crore (~$2 billion) and has a separate partnership with OpenAI to help build the latter's India infrastructure.
The move places TCS alongside Adani Group, Reliance, HCLTech (partnered with Sarvam in Odisha), and L&T (via Vyoma.AI) in a wave of Indian conglomerates building domestic AI compute capacity rather than relying solely on hyperscaler-owned regions. A fully built 1 GW campus would rank among India's largest AI infrastructure sites, signaling that global compute demand — including from labs like OpenAI — now supports gigawatt-scale, India-based capacity commitments, not just leased cloud footprints from Microsoft, Google, or AWS.
For builders, the campus adds a new high-density GPU hosting option in South Asia, potentially easing capacity constraints for labs and enterprises serving the region. For investors, TCS's move into capital-intensive AI infrastructure — alongside TPG's continued backing — marks a legacy IT services firm taking on a materially different capex and margin profile than its core outsourcing business, worth tracking as the project moves from land acquisition to construction.
