Tian Keyu's world-model lab reportedly raises nearly $30M at $200M valuation
Tian Keyu's AI laboratory has reportedly raised nearly $30 million from investors including 5Y Capital and IDG Capital, reaching a $200 million post-money valuation, according to Tech Planet's report carried by Sina. The laboratory has not publicly announced a name or released a finished product. Its focus is world models that learn physical rules and predict object movement and how environments change in response to actions, with potential applications in robotics, autonomous driving and interactive video.
The investment backs foundational model research before an application business exists. Tian plans to train on roughly 100 million hours of video and expects to release a complete model in 2027. He says the approach could reduce the cost of generating one second of video by at least an order of magnitude; the report provides no validation of that target. The relevant market question is whether a general-purpose model of physical behavior can support multiple downstream uses. Consumer products and commercialization plans are not currently on the team's agenda, leaving technical progress as the immediate test of the investment thesis.
Investors should assess the proposed cost reduction alongside founder governance. ByteDance dismissed Tian in 2024 and subsequently sought RMB 8 million in damages plus RMB 20,000 in expenses over alleged interference with a research project's training tasks. The report says Tian later acknowledged serious misconduct involving disruption of others' training to obtain GPU resources, but gives no court outcome. A concrete diligence priority is to verify reproducible generation costs and controls over access to training resources before treating the valuation as evidence of commercial readiness.
