Waymo opens its robotaxi compute stack to scrutiny

Waymo has disclosed new details about the in-vehicle compute system powering its robotaxi fleet, including a custom silicon chip, processor specifications, internal components, and its hardware-supplier network. The company says the trunk-mounted system processes a 360-degree stream from cameras, lidar, and radar, turning it into driving commands in milliseconds. Waymo describes the design priorities as responsiveness, ruggedization, and redundancy, with parallel systems intended to preserve operation if one fails.

The disclosure makes the autonomous-driving race look less like a pure software contest and more like a tightly integrated physical-AI systems problem. Waymo says it has scaled its onboard compute capacity 20-fold over eight years while balancing data-center-class performance against heat, vibration, noise, space, and real-time safety requirements inside a passenger vehicle. That combination raises the cost and engineering depth required to compete in robotaxis: a capable driving model must be paired with reliable sensors, specialized compute, and fail-safe vehicle integration.

For builders, the practical lesson is that autonomy performance depends on the full deployment stack, not just model capability or simulation results. For investors, Waymo's move provides a clearer view of where differentiation may accumulate: proprietary hardware-software co-design and operational reliability can become as consequential as the driving model itself, particularly as fleets expand across varied road and weather conditions.
