Sand.ai targets RMB 300M investment from Wangsu at implied RMB 6.8B valuation

Wangsu Technology disclosed on September 29 that it plans to invest RMB 300 million in video-generation model developer Sand.ai for a 4.3963% stake, implying a post-investment valuation of approximately RMB 6.8 billion. The investment agreements had not been formally signed when the announcement was disclosed. Sand.ai reported first-half 2026 revenue of RMB 17.398 million and a loss of RMB 152 million. Its music-video creation product, VidMuse, launched in January; the company says it exceeded $10 million in annual recurring revenue within two months, a run-rate claim distinct from recognized revenue.

The proposed deal connects a model developer with an infrastructure incumbent seeking higher-value workloads. Wangsu operates more than 2,800 edge nodes across over 70 countries, while its CDN and edge-computing business posted a 15.85% gross margin in the first half. Sand.ai develops video models and sells creator applications, giving it exposure to both model supply and downstream distribution. Following our August coverage of its open-source MoE video model, this investment adds a potential infrastructure partner to the commercialization story. Wangsu says the companies will explore audiovisual inference and low-latency edge inference, but the announcement disclosed no implemented joint commercial orders.

For investors, the concrete test is whether exploratory cooperation becomes paid inference demand with workable margins. Video generation requires substantial compute and bandwidth, but an existing distribution network does not establish that Sand.ai's models can run economically across Wangsu's nodes. Track signed agreements, joint orders and deployment economics before assigning value to the partnership beyond the proposed minority equity stake.
