Seed funding for an early-stage AI biotech startup is an incremental update within the healthcare/bio segment, with a novel angle in multi-agent scientist collaboration.
Bionexus, a South Korean AI-driven biotech startup, announced on August 7, 2026 that it has raised seed funding from Base Ventures and SMB Investment Partners. Founded in November 2024, the company develops a drug discovery platform that combines AI-based bio-data intelligence with scientist agents. The core engine, NexusScience, structures the thinking and research processes of scientists, and on top of it, Bionexus offers NexusRAG, a customized research search tool; Nexus Co-Scientist, a multi-agent collaborative research platform; and NexusDrugLab, a drug-target analysis platform.
The key product, Nexus Co-Scientist, is an AI scientist agent that analyzes large volumes of papers and bio-data related to specific diseases or research topics to generate new research hypotheses. It mimics the workings of a human research team: multiple AI agents take on roles like information retrieval, hypothesis generation, review, and evaluation, refining each other's outputs collaboratively. The platform extends beyond hypothesis generation to data analysis, validation, and experiment design throughout the research process.
Since its founding, Bionexus has completed over 30 research projects and built a network of joint research with 15 institutions, including the Korea Basic Science Institute, the National Primate Research Center, and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology. CEO Kim Tae-hyung brings about 20 years of experience in bio-data analysis, having previously served as a division head at Theragen Bio and participated in the Korean Personal Genome Project. The company plans to use the funding to advance its AI scientist agent technology and expand its business both domestically and internationally, positioning itself as a practical alternative to global tech giants like Google DeepMind in the AI scientist market.
