Anthropic Weighs New Model Release Ahead of IPO as OpenAI's Astra Narrows Its Enterprise Lead
Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model ahead of its planned IPO to counter OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, released September 3, according to Reuters sourcing from three people familiar with the matter. The move sits in tension with CEO Dario Amodei's September 12 essay urging the industry to slow the pace of capability releases over safety risks, which drew public backing from OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Anthropic is said to be evaluating the safety of its next model as part of the decision; the company declined to comment.
The competitive shift is concrete: Astra now accounts for about 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp versus roughly 8% for Claude Fable, and OpenAI's models outspent Anthropic's on OpenRouter developer traffic last week for the first time in over two and a half years. That dents Anthropic's standing as presumptive enterprise AI leader just as it courts IPO investors on a growth story built around a $65bn annualized run rate (from about $9bn a year earlier) and a projected $190β200bn by 2028. It also lands days after Anthropic's own $1B, five-year commitment with Accenture's Faculty unit to embed independent safety evaluators β a deal AMW covered this week that a competitive-pressure release would sit awkwardly beside. Per the AI Market Watch index, Anthropic has raised $132.3B in disclosed funding to date (index coverage of roughly 5,000 tracked companies, not a census).
For enterprise buyers, model selection is now visibly contested: Meta, historically one of Anthropic's largest customers, is reported to be reducing its reliance on Anthropic models as it builds more capability internally β a vendor-concentration signal IPO investors will price in. The real test for Anthropic is shipping a competitive response without diluting the safety-first brand it just spent $1B reinforcing, while leadership among the top labs keeps rotating with each model generation.
