Anthropic confirmed it operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area to run physical experiments alongside its AI models.

Anthropic confirmed to reporters that it runs a wet lab in the Bay Area under Eric Kauderer-Abrams, its head of life sciences, doing both internal research and work with external partners. The lab traces to its April acquisition of stealth AI biotech Coefficient Bio. Anthropic said the focus is fundamental biology rather than drug discovery, to avoid appearing to compete with pharma customers such as Novo Nordisk, with whom it has a joint drug-discovery deal. This week Anthropic also launched a Life Sciences Verification Program giving vetted bio researchers access to its most capable models, following recent published reports on accelerating protein design and biomolecular modeling.

Frontier labs have mostly confined AI-for-science claims to model outputs and benchmark papers; a company-operated wet lab is a step toward closing the loop between model prediction and physical verification, which Anthropic's life sciences lead called "the final test" for biology claims. The move also lands one week after CEO Dario Amodei called for industry self-regulation and repeatedly flagged bioterrorism as a top AI risk, while an internal alignment lead has put extinction-risk odds above 10 percent this decade — a lab capable of testing biological theories physically invites the exact misuse-adjacent scrutiny that framing is meant to preempt.

For AI-bio players, the move signals that leading model labs may increasingly build or buy physical verification infrastructure rather than license it, narrowing the pitch smaller AI-bio startups make around validating model outputs for pharma clients. Per the AI Market Watch index, Anthropic has raised $132.3B in total funding to date (coverage limited to the ~5,000 companies our index tracks) — capital depth that lets it absorb wet-lab operating costs most model-only labs can't justify.
