BrainU, a Seoul Biohub-resident startup, signed a clinical research agreement on August 26 with Chungnam National University Veterinary Hospital to validate VET CAI (Cortical Activity Index), its AI-based device for measuring anesthesia depth in companion animals. VET CAI uses a non-invasive method that reads EEG signals without shaving fur, addressing a long-standing gap: breed-specific skull shapes and thick coats have made stable electrode placement on pets impractical, so vets have relied on indirect signals like heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure to judge anesthesia depth. The hospital's clinical infrastructure will be used to collect anesthesia data across diverse breeds and body types, feeding results back into BrainU's AI algorithms. VET CAI previously won a CES 2025 Innovation Award.
The deal extends a monitoring approach standard in human operating rooms — real-time brain-activity indexing during anesthesia — into a veterinary market that has lacked a workable version of it. It is a narrow but concrete example of AI making a previously infeasible physiological measurement practical at the point of care, rather than automating paperwork or triage. Veterinary AI draws far less capital and attention than human-health documentation or diagnostics tools, so a clinically-focused device with an award already in hand is a useful marker of where hardware-plus-AI monitoring can travel next.
For builders and investors in adjacent veterinary or physiological-monitoring hardware, the relevant signal is process, not funding: BrainU is building its evidence base through a single-hospital data-accumulation partnership rather than a multi-site trial, typical for an early device with industry recognition but not yet published clinical outcomes.
