Chinese robotics startup JoyIn founder and CEO Guo Renjie has accused OpenAI of copying the model and website of its humanoid robot Aether, saying in an open letter that he will pursue legal action. Guo points to overlapping vocabulary in OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra materials, similar extraterrestrial framing after JoyIn’s Silicon Valley “alien visitor” talk a month before OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki’s September 6 essay “An Alien Mind,” and near-identical space-particle effects on the Astra page versus Aether’s site, which he says went live two months earlier. He also argues mid-August JoyIn language on recursive self-improvement and AI-driven compute optimization reappeared in Pachocki’s comments weeks later. CNBC reported OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment. Aether is led by Zhu Mingxuan, formerly of Figure, and JoyIn claims about 90% first-attempt success on physical tasks via perceptual rather than text-based control. Founded in December 2024, JoyIn has commercialized companion robot M1 with more than 30,000 orders.
The claim matters because it flips the usual distillation narrative—Chinese labs accused of extracting Western model outputs—into a Chinese humanoid startup charging a U.S. frontier lab with absorbing its packaging, demos, and web presentation. For builders and investors, treat launch copy, conceptual frameworks, and product microsites as contested assets in physical AI: timestamp publications, retain design and demo provenance, and expect more cross-border IP theater as commercial humanoids scale and frontier labs lean into alien-mind and self-improving-system language.
