Cab-less trucking company Einride and German food retailer Lidl, part of Schwarz Group, have started daily operations with an SAE Level 4 autonomous truck on a public road in Germany. The vehicle runs with no driver or safety operator on board under an official Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) permit described as the first of its kind in the country. It is moving goods between a Lidl warehouse and distribution centre and a Lidl store. Einride says it already runs autonomous deliveries with real volumes and schedules for customers in the US and Europe; Germany is a key market, and the partners plan to expand the route toward a multi-stop milkrun while discussing further deployments across Schwarz Group companies.
For the physical-AI and autonomous-logistics market, the load-bearing fact is not another closed-yard demo but regulatory clearance plus a grocery-scale buyer putting scheduled volume on a fixed public route. Germany is Europe’s largest road-transport market and among the strictest on safety validation; a KBA green light for true cab-less Level 4 operations is a harder bar than pilot language usually implies. Einride, founded in 2016 with $865M in total funding per the AI Market Watch index (coverage of ~5,000 tracked companies, not a census), is using that clearance to move autonomy from showcase into everyday retail logistics.
Builders and investors should read this as a route-constrained retail milkrun proof point, not open-highway general autonomy. The near-term commercial path is warehouse-to-store links and multi-stop site logistics under defined operating domains, and capital will favor operators who can stack similar permits across EU markets with Schwarz-scale logistics partners rather than those still stuck in supervised trials.
