Endeavor Optical Networks (EON), a startup founded in May and emerging from stealth today, announced a $10.75 million seed round from General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz to develop a space-based laser communications network. The company aims to provide dedicated data links between continents at speeds up to 2.4 terabits per second, targeting hyperscalers and AI labs with underserved or expensive routes.
Why it matters: EON's approach addresses a growing bottleneck in AI infrastructure — the physical movement of data between distributed data centers. As compute clusters expand globally, reliance on undersea fiber optic cables presents latency and resilience challenges.
