AMD to acquire World Labs in $8.2 billion all-stock deal
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial AI research company co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, for approximately $8.2 billion in stock. World Labs launched Marble, a model that generates interactive 3D worlds from prompts, in 2025. After the transaction closes, Li is expected to become AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions; World Labs’ team will continue its model research.
The acquisition links model development more directly to AMD’s AI infrastructure business. Spatial models that generate and simulate 3D environments place different demands on compute systems than text models, and AMD says World Labs’ research will inform its hardware, software and systems. That makes the deal an unusually large commitment to understanding emerging workloads from inside a chip company. It also extends AMD’s recent push into robotics compute, following its September launch of embedded processors and modules aimed at robotics workloads. Li’s move to chief scientist brings a leading AI researcher into that effort, though the announced research role does not establish how AMD’s products will change.
For builders, the practical question is whether World Labs’ models and AMD’s compute platforms become easier to use together for 3D generation and simulation. For investors, the $8.2 billion price raises the bar for evidence that model expertise improves AMD’s infrastructure offering. The closing of the deal, continued research output and concrete system capabilities will matter more than the acquisition announcement alone.
