Updates the player map for AI infrastructure with a significant funding round for a European hardware challenger targeting energy-efficient edge inference.
Dutch AI chip startup Axelera AI secured $250 million in funding led by Innovation Industries, with BlackRock and SiteGround Capital joining as new investors. This brings total capital raised since 2021 to over $450 million, making it the largest investment in a European AI semiconductor company. The funds will scale production of their Europa inference chip launching before June, manufactured by Samsung's foundry for edge AI applications. With 500+ customers already onboard and their 214-TOPS chip consuming just 10 watts, Axelera positions Europe as a credible alternative to NVIDIA in energy-efficient AI inference. The EU also backed Axelera with a $66 million grant for their 2027 Titania chip targeting AI factories.
