GitHub expands Copilot agent management and plans Azure migration
GitHub introduced Copilot App, Fusion, Projects, Automation and Code Review Max at GitHub Universe 2026. The tools connect development tasks across projects, let agents work across repositories and automate tasks such as issue triage and code review. Fusion selects and coordinates models based on task performance and cost. GitHub also plans to complete its move to a multi-region Microsoft Azure operating environment in early 2027.
The announcements extend GitHub's role in AI coding from code generation into managing work across the development cycle. Copilot App and Projects give developers a shared place to direct agents and review their progress, while session continuity lets work move between devices and tools. GitHub said Fusion Max scored within two points of Anthropic's Opus 5.5 Max on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, at half the cost and with 40% less time per task. Those figures are GitHub's reported benchmark comparison, not proof of results across customer projects.
For enterprise buyers, GitHub plans to offer Copilot features without a separate Copilot subscription, charging instead for AI credits used. The option is available through its sales team, with self-service planned later. Builders evaluating it will need to compare credit consumption and review effort against their existing workflows. Developers remain responsible for final results, even when agents implement and check changes. GitHub said it added 4 million CPU cores, 160 petabytes of high-speed storage and 50 terabits per second of network capacity this year to support growing agent workloads.
