Hugging Face acquisition draws US antitrust scrutiny
The US Justice Department is examining Nvidia's proposed $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, Reuters reported, citing two people familiar with the matter. Officials are asking whether Nvidia could use the platform to control a major channel for AI model distribution or disadvantage rivals. Nvidia has said it expects the deal to close in the first half of 2027 and that Hugging Face will continue to work with a range of chip, cloud and AI providers.
The inquiry adds a competition question to a deal that would bring a widely used model-sharing platform under the ownership of a leading AI chip supplier. Hugging Face helps developers and companies share and use models and related software from many providers. Regulators are examining whether control of that distribution channel could extend Nvidia's influence beyond chips. The review also sits alongside a broader investigation into Nvidia's acquisitions, sales practices and treatment of customers. An inquiry does not establish wrongdoing, and a lawsuit or sanction remains uncertain.
For builders and investors, continued access across chip and cloud providers is a concrete issue to watch as the review proceeds. Nvidia has pledged to support that access, but the reported inquiry tests the competitive implications of its ownership. The Justice Department has also examined Nvidia's dealings involving Groq, SchedMD and Run:ai, according to the report. The Hugging Face review therefore extends the earlier acquisition announcement with a regulatory development, while leaving the deal's outcome unresolved.
