Google opens Google Home to MCP agents on Premium Advanced
Google has begun rolling out early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Google Home ecosystem, allowing any MCP-supporting AI agent — including Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw, and Google Antigravity — to securely control connected devices and access event history. Users create a Google Cloud project configured for Home MCP, pass those details to their chosen agent, then sign in and grant permissions. The surface covers Nest doorbells and thermostats plus Matter and “Works with Google Home” devices, enabling natural-language camera summaries, activity monitoring, device control, and custom dashboards. Access starts today for U.S. subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced ($20 per month); Google would not say whether other tiers or markets will follow.
The release extends Google’s MCP strategy from Cloud, Workspace, and developer tooling into the consumer smart-home loop, following recent Gemini Enterprise legal connectors built on the same protocol. For the agent market, Home becomes a permissioned action surface rather than a Google Assistant–only silo: third-party agents can act on a real device graph and event history. That is the difference between chat demos and daily utility — physical-world tool access — and Google is choosing an open protocol for this early Premium Advanced cohort instead of locking the surface to its own assistant.
Builders should treat Home MCP as a gated channel: U.S. Premium Advanced only, Cloud-project setup friction, and feedback collected through the Smart Home for Developers Community. Investors tracking agent platforms should watch whether other durable consumer graphs (calendar, payments, vehicles) follow the same MCP exposure pattern before exclusivity or deeper Google-native agents reassert distribution control.
