Jizai opens pre-orders for Palmimo DevKit, a 21-axis desktop AI robot built for software engineers entering robotics.

Japanese startup Jizai began pre-sales on September 3 of the Palmimo DevKit, a customizable desktop AI robot development kit, pricing the initial production lot at 598,000 yen (~$4,000, tax excluded) for developers and business customers. The device carries 21 axes of movement and multiple sensors, and is designed so operators can specify behavior through simple commands rather than low-level motion programming. Jizai says the kit links AI decision-making directly to robot motion, supports swapping the underlying AI model, and can integrate external data sources. The company plans to open-source the accompanying software in stages, starting with a Python SDK and AI agent implementations.

The launch targets a specific gap: as generative AI and AI agents mature, interest in physical AI is rising, but most software engineers have no path into robotics without deep motion-control expertise. By packaging sensor-rich hardware behind a software-first interface — swappable models, an open SDK, external data hooks — Jizai positions the DevKit as an on-ramp for agent-building skills already common in software teams, rather than shipping a finished consumer or industrial robot. The offering is currently a small pre-sale batch, not a validated commercial product line.

For builders, the signal worth tracking is uptake among the initial developer and enterprise buyers, and whether the open-source SDK draws third-party AI-agent integrations ahead of broader retail availability. For investors, the relevant comparison set is the emerging cluster of software-to-hardware robotics dev kits, not established industrial or humanoid robot makers, since Jizai's near-term economics rest on hardware pre-sales rather than recurring platform revenue.
