Omen AI, a liquid cooling startup founded by 20-year-old high school dropout Zach Laberge, has closed a $31 million Series A to bring continuous, real-time fluid monitoring to AI data centers. The company's miniaturized spectrometers track coolant for copper and chromium from component wear, silicon from seal degradation, and bacterial growth, addressing the costly risk of chip cluster shutdowns. Flushing an affected rack can take five to six hours and cost millions in lost computing time, according to the company and press coverage. The round was led by Nava Ventures, with participation from CRV, Sheryl Sandberg, Mann+Hummel, and executives from TensorWave, a customer. Omen has raised $41.5 million total, per the AI Market Watch index, and employs 30 people in San Francisco.
This funding addresses a specific pain point in AI infrastructure: as AI chips run hotter, operators are shifting coolant formulations to use more water, which improves heat absorption but accelerates bacterial contamination. Traditional methods involve sending coolant samples to external labs and waiting days for results—a lag that is increasingly untenable as data center capacity nearly doubles to 200 GW by 2030, with liquid cooling becoming the default for new construction. Omen's subscription-based monitoring, priced per megawatt, targets neoclouds first but is expanding to larger cloud operators. The company's pivot from construction equipment to data centers, made roughly six months before the raise, reflects the growing value of maintaining uptime in GPU-dense facilities.
For builders, this signals that operational reliability—not just compute power—is becoming a competitive differentiator in AI data centers. Startups that can prevent downtime or optimize infrastructure for high-density, liquid-cooled deployments are finding receptive buyers. For investors, the round shows capital flowing into infrastructure-adjacent services that support the AI buildout, even as large cloud operators may eventually build similar capabilities in-house. Omen's challenge is to scale quickly enough to become essential infrastructure before that happens, as Laberge himself acknowledged. The company's focus on hiring for skill over formal credentials and its young founder story add a distinctive talent angle to its growth trajectory.
