Unit1 Studio raises £20M to scale AI-driven avatar concert technology beyond the ABBA Voyage model

UK-based Unit1 Studio has raised £20 million (~$25 million / €23.3 million) in an oversubscribed equity round led by Balderton Capital, with existing backers Mercuri, Gilston Music, and artist manager Paul McGuinness also participating. The round includes separate production financing earmarked specifically for concerts currently in development. Unit1 builds mixed-reality avatar concerts that combine CGI, visual effects, and live performance elements, letting artists who no longer tour — or whose live shows are otherwise hard for audiences to access — perform through avatar-based productions. Founder Barney Wragg said the company has found a way to transfer these productions between venues faster and at lower cost than prior efforts, aiming to make relocatable avatar shows commercially viable at scale.

ABBA Voyage proved there is real audience demand for avatar-based live experiences, but its bespoke venue and steep production/relocation costs have kept the format a singular event rather than a repeatable business. Unit1 is positioning its technology as the infrastructure layer that turns avatar concerts into a portable, multi-venue product instead of a one-off flagship installation — productizing the CGI rendering and live-performance pipeline that previously had to be custom-built per show. If Unit1's lower per-venue cost claim holds up, it creates a template other artist estates, labels, and touring companies could license rather than build themselves, moving AI-assisted digital-human and virtual-performance content from novelty spectacle toward a more repeatable distribution model.

For investors, institutional venture capital (Balderton) backing infrastructure for avatar concerts alongside music-industry money (Gilston Music, McGuinness) signals a bet on the underlying production economics rather than any single show. For builders, the specific bottleneck Unit1 is targeting — venue-to-venue redeployment cost — is the same constraint facing any team building reusable pipelines for CGI, motion capture, or synthetic-performance content, making Unit1's cost-reduction claim a data point worth tracking as productions ship.
