World Labs agrees to $8.2 billion AMD acquisition as chipmaker expands into world models
AMD and World Labs have agreed to an $8.2 billion all-stock acquisition, AI Times reports. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of 2026. World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li would join AMD as chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. AMD already invested in World Labs, and the companies have worked together on model training and software optimization using AMD chips.
The proposed purchase would bring a world-model developer inside a major AI chip supplier. World Labs' Marble creates interactive 3D scenes from limited visual inputs, while its recently launched Atlas spans text, images, video and 3D. Those capabilities could serve robotics training and simulation, where model behavior and the systems used to train and run it are closely linked. For AMD, the strategic question is whether owning model research can help shape its hardware and software around emerging workloads while it competes with Nvidia's broader AI platform.
Builders working on robotics or simulation should watch whether the existing AMD and World Labs collaboration produces usable development tools and reliable deployment performance after the deal closes. Investors should assess the same evidence before treating the purchase price as proof of demand: the acquisition adds research capability, but the report does not establish commercial adoption for World Labs' models.
