Incremental update to an already-tracked player, but the valuation jump and parallel XDOF raise signal a segment-level land rush for physical-world robot training data.
Mecka AI is nearing a roughly $500 million valuation in a new round led by Sequoia Capital, just three months after a $60 million raise.
Mecka AI, founded in 2024 by four co-founders with no robotics background — Josh Gao, Mogen Cheng, Jason Chong, and Duy Nguyen — is in talks for a round led by Sequoia Capital that would value the company at about $500 million, according to people familiar with the deal; terms are not final. The move follows a $60 million round three months earlier led by Framework Ventures, with Menlo Ventures, SV Angel, and Kindred Ventures participating. Mecka pays people to record themselves performing everyday tasks — making coffee, fixing a car — using body sensors and smartphones, an egocentric-capture method robotics companies and AI labs use to train humanoid and general-purpose robots. As of early June, Mecka was projecting a $100 million annual run rate by the end of 2026.
The raise underscores a land rush for physical-world training data as the bottleneck for general-purpose robots shifts from model architecture to scarcity of real-world interaction footage. Mecka's pitch — doing for robotics what Scale AI and Surge did for language models — is drawing capital ahead of proven commercial deployment, echoed by rival XDOF reportedly nearing a $1.2 billion valuation on the same thesis, and by Scale AI and Micro1 both extending from LLM labeling into physical data.
For robotics builders, well-funded third-party data vendors could lower the cost of assembling training corpora the way labeling marketplaces did for LLMs, but valuations are moving faster than disclosed revenue in both this deal and XDOF's. Per the AI Market Watch index, which tracks Mecka AI under Robotics/Embodied AI, prior funding stood at $68 million ahead of this round — a reminder that headline valuations can outrun confirmed capital raised (index coverage spans roughly 5,000 companies, not a census).
