Mecka AI raises $60M to build human-motion datasets for robot training

Mecka AI announced a $60 million Series B led by Sequoia, with participation from Nvidia, Microsoft's venture fund M12, and other investors. Founded in 2024, the startup collects and analyzes human-motion data for training humanoid robots and other robots. It pays people to record everyday tasks, including making coffee and fixing cars, using body sensors and smartphones. TechCrunch previously reported that Mecka was nearing a round at a $500 million valuation; the announcement described here does not confirm that valuation.

The round highlights a distinct business within physical AI: supplying training data rather than building robots. Mecka aims to serve robotics as Scale AI, Mercor, and Surge have served LLM developers through human-generated data. That puts it at the intersection of embodied AI and data preparation, where the commercial question is whether recorded human activity becomes useful training material for robot tasks. Competition already spans specialist suppliers and established human-data platforms: TechCrunch names XDOF as another real-world robot-data startup, while Scale AI and Micro1 are expanding into robotics. The funding strengthens one supplier's position without establishing which collection approach produces better robot performance.

For builders and investors, the concrete diligence question is how well these demonstrations transfer to the intended robot and task. Buyers should evaluate task coverage, sensor consistency, and measurable performance gains before treating dataset volume as an advantage. Sequoia's lead investment and Nvidia's and M12's participation are notable financing signals, but the report provides no customer results or evidence of training effectiveness.
