Meta launches AI agent for WhatsApp Business globally, infusing AI into business communication.

Meta has globally launched its AI-powered customer support bot, now called Meta Business Agent, within WhatsApp Business, following nearly two years of testing in countries like India and Mexico. The agent can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and transfer complex queries to human staff. Meta is also making the bot available inside Instagram DMs and is testing daily chat briefings and business insights for select accounts. Crucially, Meta is charging businesses for the AI agent through tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, with large enterprises paying based on token usage.

This move positions WhatsApp as an AI-augmented workflow platform for small and medium businesses, extending its role beyond a messaging layer. It fits the hyperscaler-distribution pattern: Meta leverages its massive installed base of WhatsApp Business users (over 200 million monthly active businesses) to drive AI adoption through an existing distribution channel, rather than selling the agent as a standalone product. The token-based pricing for large enterprises signals a shift from flat messaging fees to consumption-based AI pricing, which could reshape how SMBs and enterprises budget for conversational commerce.

For the AI market, this is a significant validation of the embedded-agent thesis: the most impactful AI deployments may not be standalone apps but features injected into workflows that already have high engagement. Meta's advantage is not model quality but distribution—WhatsApp is the primary customer communication tool for millions of businesses in emerging markets like India, Brazil, and Mexico, where few competing AI agents have meaningful reach. The challenge, however, is agent reliability at planetary scale: handling nuanced customer queries across languages and cultures without producing errors that erode trust in business communication.
