Mistral AI previews Large 4 with open weights planned for October
Mistral AI has previewed Mistral Large 4, a multimodal reasoning model with one trillion total parameters and about 49 billion active parameters in its mixture-of-experts architecture. Available through Mistral's API, the model is expected to reach Hugging Face and other repositories before month-end. The French company says it trained the model on roughly 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in its European data centers, using a corpus spanning more than 160 languages.
The release strengthens Mistral's position among foundation-model providers offering downloadable weights, but scale alone does not establish a capability lead. The Register reports that Artificial Analysis places the preview below OpenAI's and Anthropic's flagship models, while ahead of Thinking Machines Lab's Inkling. Mistral's own benchmark comparisons are more favorable and should be treated as vendor claims. The market distinction is deployment control: planned open weights would let organizations operate the model under their own policies, extending competition beyond benchmark rankings to autonomy and infrastructure requirements.
For enterprise builders, cybersecurity is a concrete evaluation target. Mistral argues that provider refusals can obstruct legitimate vulnerability research and incident response, positioning self-deployment as a way to retain access under customer-defined policies. Buyers should test that claim on authorized security workflows and measure serving costs before committing infrastructure. The 49-billion active-parameter count describes per-token computation; it should not be treated as the model's total storage or memory footprint. Mistral has not provided hardware requirements, and the weights remain a planned release.
