Elon Musk confirmed August 29 that SpaceX has built a foundry in Bastrop, Texas to cast gas-turbine blades and vanes in-house, after reports of related job listings and roughly 830 acres bought near its Starlink plant between March and June. Musk said SpaceX and Tesla are each building 100GW/year of solar capacity, but gas is still needed to bootstrap it, and in-house casting could pull turbine deployment forward by up to 18 months. Only four companies worldwide cast single-crystal turbine blades at industrial scale, and all are sold out; GE Vernova's capacity is booked through 2030, largely on AI demand.

Power, not GPUs, is now the binding constraint on AI buildout: the IEA projects global data center electricity demand roughly doubling by 2030, and Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft have all turned to on-site gas generation to skip grid queues. Mastering blade casting would give SpaceXAI a capability every other hyperscaler-scale AI builder depends on a small oligopoly for, extending the vertical integration begun when xAI merged into SpaceX and rebranded as SpaceXAI. It also raises the stakes on scrutiny already facing the group: the NAACP has accused SpaceXAI of running Memphis Colossus turbines without required permits since 2024, and a Piedmont Environmental Council study of a comparable Virginia site estimated 3.4 to 6.5 excess premature deaths a year nearby.

For builders and investors, private gas generation is now core to frontier AI capacity plans, not a stopgap, and turbine-casting capacity is a new supply chokepoint worth tracking alongside chips. For SpaceXAI, faster deployment collides with growing regulatory and litigation exposure in Memphis, meaning any Bastrop manufacturing edge will be tested against permitting and health challenges before it ships power.
