Confirms a previously rumored $12.9B deal, converting the dominant AI compute vendor into owner of the leading open-weight model and dataset distribution hub, a structural, cross-segment capital event.
Nvidia Confirms $12.9B Acquisition of Hugging Face
Nvidia has officially confirmed its $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, ending weeks of reported talks. The platform hosts three million models, one million applications, half a million datasets, and serves more than 18 million developers. In a blog post, CEO Jensen Huang pledged that Hugging Face will stay an open platform: developers keep choosing their own models, frameworks, clouds, and inference providers, and Nvidia compute will not be required to build or deploy through the hub. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said on X that the company needed more compute, support, collaboration, and visibility to scale further, which is what led to talks with Huang. The deal values Hugging Face at nearly 3x its 2023 round, when it raised $235 million led by Salesforce Ventures with Google, Amazon, IBM, and Nvidia participating; Nvidia had reportedly offered just $500 million a year earlier.
The move turns Nvidia from a GPU supplier that funds open models into the owner of the platform most open-weight models and datasets actually distribute through. Huang has publicly pushed open-weight models as a strategic counterweight to China, and Nvidia has already published more than 500 models and 250 datasets on Hugging Face; owning the hub lets it bundle spare compute capacity with Hugging Face's developer reach for enterprise customers. Per the AI Market Watch index, our pipeline logged 58 Hugging Face items in the last 90 days versus 15 in the prior 90 (name-matched over ingested sources only) β a clear signal of how fast this story accelerated from rumor to close.
This is the fourth stage in a sequence we've tracked since late August: sale exploration, early talks, an unconfirmed agreement, and now confirmation. For builders, the practical question is whether "no compute lock-in" holds as Hugging Face integrates with Nvidia's stack over time. For investors, Hugging Face's 2023 backers β Salesforce Ventures, Google, Amazon, IBM β now hold stakes in a company folded into their chip supplier's ecosystem, and rival clouds lose a neutral distribution layer for open models.
