Nvidia Confirms $12.93 Billion Acquisition of Hugging Face

Nvidia has officially confirmed its acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, with completion expected in the first half of 2027. CEO Jensen Huang said Nvidia will scale the platform and strengthen its infrastructure while keeping it open to all model builders, pledging continued support for open-source and open-weight models and for multi-cloud, multi-accelerator deployment. Hugging Face, founded in France in 2016 and now based in New York, hosts roughly 3 million models for about 18 million developers; Nvidia has already published more than 500 models there. The price is nearly 2.9x the $4.5 billion valuation Nvidia backed in Hugging Face's 2023 Series D round.

The confirmation caps weeks of reporting β€” per the AI Market Watch index, Hugging Face mentions in AMW's pipeline jumped to 61 in the last 90 days from 15 in the prior period (name-matched, pipeline coverage only) β€” as the story moved from a reported sale exploration to a signed deal. It hands ownership of the primary distribution hub for open-weight models, the platform Meta, Mistral, and other open labs rely on to reach developers, to the dominant GPU vendor. Nvidia's multi-accelerator pledge is meant to offset the obvious tension: the company now controls both the chips most AI teams train and serve on and the shelf where much of the open-model ecosystem gets discovered.

For builders, near-term Hub behavior shouldn't change, but teams standardizing tooling around it should watch whether inference or fine-tuning defaults quietly favor Nvidia hardware over time. For investors, Nvidia paying almost 3x a two-year-old valuation for a company that doesn't train frontier models itself reprices open-model distribution as a strategic asset in its own right, not just an adjunct to compute.
