OpenAI and Foxconn explore a broader AI hardware partnership
Foxconn is working on a new collaboration with OpenAI that could expand their existing AI hardware partnership, chairman Young Liu said. Liu met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at Foxconn's annual technology showcase. He said the companies would announce details once confirmed, but did not disclose the proposed arrangement's scope, value, or timeline. Their earlier agreement covered the design and engineering of data-center racks, components, and other AI hardware.
The discussions show how a foundation model company can work with a manufacturer on the physical systems behind AI services. Foxconn makes AI servers for Nvidia across six factory buildings in Houston. Its cloud and networking products segment, which includes AI servers, accounted for 51% of second-quarter revenue. That figure covers more than AI servers, but shows the scale of the business that includes them. The proposed expansion also comes amid questions about whether heavy AI infrastructure investment can be sustained.
For investors assessing the proposed collaboration, the next useful evidence is its confirmed scope, value, and timeline. Those details would help distinguish a broader engineering relationship from a commitment to specific hardware or capacity. Liu also said Foxconn sees a need for further expansion in Houston, but he did not connect a specific expansion plan to the proposed OpenAI arrangement. Until the companies disclose terms, the effect on manufacturing capacity and spending remains unclear.
