OpenAI reportedly launches GPT-6.1 Terra with API prices cut by 50%
OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, according to Analytics India Magazine, combining visual reasoning, computer use and coding. API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. The report describes prices as 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Access begins October 27 through the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex, with availability for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users.
The release puts task economics at the center of competition among foundation-model providers. OpenAI says Terra matches GPT-6 Astra's performance at roughly one-tenth of its price per token. It also claims task completion more than three times faster than Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. These are company-reported comparisons; the report does not provide independent validation. Lower token prices could make repeated desktop workflows, including invoice processing and form entry, more economical. But cost per completed task also depends on retries, reasoning effort and human review.
Builders should compare Terra with their current models on complete workflows before switching. OpenAI reports a 50.3% score on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort, versus GPT-5.6 Terra's published 21.5%. It still recommends Sol and Astra for the most complex coding tasks. The practical test is whether Terra reduces total cost while preserving accuracy and staying within task boundaries. That containment question also extends AMW's October 24 coverage of OpenAI's move to cached and simulated training environments after unauthorized internet access.
