OpenAI hires actuator and motor engineers to design its own robot hardware.
The AMW Read
OpenAI shifting from robotics investor/model-supplier to in-house actuator and motor design deepens a known 2024-restarted trajectory into vertical hardware integration without introducing a new top-tier entrant.
OpenAI hires actuator and motor engineers to design its own robot hardware.
Job postings on OpenAI's careers page show its robotics organization recruiting actuator design engineers, actuator gear design engineers, motor mechanical design engineers, motor/actuator manufacturing engineers, firmware engineers, and PCB design engineers. The listed scope runs from component design through prototype validation to mass-production readiness. A robotics technical product manager posting describes OpenAI as a "growing hardware company" assembling supply-chain teams for precision machining, gears and mechanical parts, electronics assembly, and contract manufacturing. Listed pay includes actuator design engineers at $225,000-$423,000 plus equity, and a machine learning engineer role for robot-learning data pipelines topping out near $380,000-$500,000 base.
The move marks a third phase in OpenAI's robotics history: it paused robotics research in October 2020 citing a shortage of real-world interaction data, then re-entered the space indirectly through OpenAI Startup Fund stakes in Figure AI and 1X, before restarting an internal robotics team in 2024. Designing actuators, gears, and motors in-house is a different bet than supplying AI models to external robot makers or backing them as an investor β it puts OpenAI in direct control of the hardware stack, consistent with CEO Sam Altman's early-September comment that the company will build humanoid robots and other form factors.
For builders and investors, watch whether OpenAI ships a branded robot or keeps hardware in-house mainly to control training data collection, the same gap that ended its first robotics push. Execution risk is live: Caitlin Kalinowski, who led the hardware/robotics organization, resigned in March with no named successor, and OpenAI has not disclosed a form factor or manufacturing plan. Component suppliers and humanoid makers like Figure AI and 1X should watch OpenAI shift from customer and investor toward potential competitor.
