OpenAI GPT-5.5 + Codex, now available and fully-governed on Databricks
The AMW Read
Incremental update to OpenAI's enterprise distribution (score 1), with segment-level significance as it strengthens the hyperscaler-distribution moat for foundation models (score 2).
OpenAI GPT-5.5 + Codex, now available and fully-governed on Databricks
OpenAI has launched GPT-5.5 and Codex on the Databricks platform, with full governance through Unity AI Gateway. The partnership integrates OpenAI's frontier model and coding agent into Databricks' Lakehouse environment, enabling enterprises to use GPT-5.5 for agent building, long-horizon coding workflows, and document reasoning. Unity AI Gateway provides centralized permissions, rate limits, cost controls, guardrails, and observability across all GPT-5.5 and Codex usage.
This move deepens the hyperscaler-distribution moat for OpenAI by embedding its models into a leading enterprise data platform, giving Databricks customers a governed, turnkey path to frontier AI. It also reinforces the enterprise distribution pattern where model providers partner with cloud and data platforms to reach corporate buyers, bypassing direct sales friction. The integration of Codex specifically targets the growing AI coding market, putting OpenAI in competition with other coding agent platforms while leveraging Databricks' enterprise relationships.
From a structural perspective, this partnership exemplifies the capital-cycle compression currently reshaping AI—model labs are racing to secure revenue through platform distribution rather than relying solely on API access. By offering governance natively, Databricks addresses a key enterprise blocker (security and cost control) that has slowed GPT adoption in regulated industries. The deal also signals that OpenAI is prioritizing enterprise revenue alongside consumer growth, a strategic shift that could reshape competitive dynamics with Anthropic and other foundation model providers.
