Proximal reports $200M revenue run rate alongside $15M seed round

Proximal emerged from stealth on September 29, announcing a $15 million seed round led by General Catalyst at a reported $300 million valuation. Scribble Ventures, SV Angel, Chemistry and Go Global Ventures also participated. The company claims more than $200 million in annualized revenue within roughly ten months of operating. Led by CEO Calvin Chen, Proximal builds reinforcement learning environments and post-training data for AI coding agents, using real codebases rather than synthetic examples. Its customers are the labs developing those agents.

The business belongs to the AI data-preparation and evaluation layer: it supplies the practice environments and feedback that help models improve at engineering tasks. That makes its competitive position different from both compute providers and developer tools. The reported run rate suggests substantial demand for realistic training environments, but does not establish that $200 million has already been collected or that sales will recur. The strategic question is whether specialist vendors can maintain an advantage as frontier labs develop their own environments. Proximal also says it is expanding into drug design, chip design and legacy software, widening the scope of that question without yet establishing comparable commercial traction in those domains.

For investors, the concrete diligence priority is the composition of the reported run rate: customer concentration, contract duration, renewal terms and delivery costs. A $300 million valuation cannot be assessed against annualized revenue alone. Builders evaluating these environments should examine whether rewards measure successful work on real codebases and whether results transfer to tasks outside the training environment.
