Empirik launches with $21M seed to catch infrastructure outages before they happen
The AMW Read
A new agentic-AI entrant applying the autonomous-action pattern to infrastructure change management, named alongside existing AI SRE players Resolve and Traversal, but the $21M seed stays well below any capital-cycle threshold.
Empirik launches with $21M seed to catch infrastructure outages before they happen
Empirik, incubated inside Sequoia Capital since 2023 by former Rubrik and VMware infrastructure executive Avon Puri and fellow Sequoia IT leader Sudheer Dhurjati, is spinning out as an independent company with $21 million in seed funding from Sequoia, Canapi, and Alumni Ventures. Sequoia recruited Kartik Chandrayana, formerly CPO at Quantum Metric and a Salesforce observability VP, as CEO earlier this year. The product tracks system changes across an infrastructure environment and infers their ripple effects, acting as an autonomous reviewer that permits low-risk changes, sets guardrails on larger ones, and flags the riskiest updates for human sign-off. Empirik says it already has Fortune 500 customers including S&P Global, Guardant Health, and a large consumer packaged goods company, alongside smaller startups.
The launch extends the agentic AI push that reshaped coding tools into a new operating domain: infrastructure change management. Where AI coding assistants act on a codebase, Empirik acts on live production systems, a higher-stakes surface where an autonomous agent's decision to approve or block a change carries direct uptime risk. Sequoia is positioning the product as complementary rather than competing with AI SRE platforms like Resolve and its own portfolio company Traversal, betting that change-risk prediction and incident response are separable enough problems to support multiple funded entrants rather than one consolidated tool.
For infrastructure teams, the open question is how much decision authority they're willing to hand an autonomous system before a change ships, not after an incident occurs — a materially different trust threshold than post-hoc monitoring tools have required. For investors, the seed round is small relative to the marquee-name incubation and CEO hire, suggesting Empirik is optimizing for enterprise proof points over capital velocity; its tiered autonomy model (permit, guardrail, flag) is the detail worth tracking as a template other agentic ops tools may converge on.
