FileAI Secures Strategic Backing From SMBC Asia Rising Fund and Singtel Innov8 for Japan Push
Singapore-based enterprise automation startup FileAI, maker of the fileForge business-process automation platform, has received a new strategic investment from SMBC Asia Rising Fund — the corporate venture fund co-established by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Incubate Fund — alongside Singtel Innov8, Singtel's corporate venture arm. The funding amount was not disclosed. The capital backs FileAI's continued expansion into Japan and the launch of fileScout, a new unstructured enterprise-data-mapping tool. FileAI lists MS&AD, Toshiba, PwC, KPMG, Nippon Paint and Keppel among its enterprise customers and says its platform has processed more than 1 billion files across finance, insurance, supply chain and healthcare workflows. Per the AI Market Watch index, FileAI has raised roughly $26 million in total funding to date, tracked within the platform's coverage of roughly 5,000 companies.
The deal extends a pattern already visible in FileAI's own fundraising history: after taking strategic capital from JR East Group's venture arm in June to establish a Japan foothold, the company is now layering in a Japanese banking CVC and a Southeast Asian telecom CVC into the same market push within a single quarter. That sequencing of corporate strategics, rather than a traditional financial-VC round, signals FileAI is prioritizing distribution and trust signals — a bank's imprimatur, a telco's regional reach — over headline valuation, a common path for document-and-workflow automation vendors selling into risk-averse regulated industries where the backer's identity carries real procurement weight.
For builders selling AI-driven document and data automation into Japan or Southeast Asia, corporate-VC-led rounds from banks and telcos are emerging as a viable substitute for standard Series funding, offering faster channel access to regulated enterprise buyers than an outside financial investor typically provides. For investors tracking the space, the undisclosed round size paired with a marquee client roster suggests FileAI is optimizing for enterprise credibility now and will likely need a disclosed, larger round to fund scaling once its Japan traction is proven.
