STEPX unveils Neo, the 'world's first' native large-model AI smartphone at WAIC 2026.

At WAIC 2026 in Shanghai, STEPX (阶跃终端) launched STEPX Neo, a smartphone purpose-built as a native large-model AI terminal. The device runs Step AOS (Agentic-native OS) and integrates the 'Amoo' personal agent, capable of executing multi-step tasks like trip planning (via携程), local services (via Alipay), and calendar conflict checks. STEPX Neo passed China's first national AI terminal intelligence classification standard at L3, and was named WAIC 2026's 'Treasure of the Hall.'

This launch updates the 'hyperscaler distribution moat' pattern: rather than relying on cloud APIs, STEPX is embedding AI agents directly on the device, forming an agentic OS that commands a curated set of partners (携程, Alipay, 滴滴, 美团) — creating a new distribution layer on the smartphone itself. It also extends the 'fastest ARR ramp' pattern for agent-native products, although the phone itself is a hardware bet. The device signals an inflection point in the debate over whether AI value capture will flow to cloud platforms or to the hardware-OS layer that mediates user-agent interaction. STEPX Neo is a concrete 'Frame 2' artifact — the device-centric model, where the OEM owns the agent and the relationships.

The significance is segment-level: if adoption ramps, STEPX could force incumbent Android OEMs to rethink their agent strategies, and accelerate the shift from cloud-based to on-device inference. The L3 national certification also suggests China is moving to formalize AI terminal intelligence levels, which could standardize the market. For now, the real test is user retention and whether the agent delivers on its promise without latency or privacy backlash.
